The 139th crossing of Normandy begins on Wednesday August 23 with arrival in NY on Monday August 28. The declaration of war surprised him in New York, and on September 6,orders were given to disarm the ship.

He remained in the care of his French crew until December 16, 1941,
date of its seizure by the Americans. They renamed it Lafayette, under the US flag, and undertook to transform it into a troop transport.
