MIYAKO ISHIUCHI : Yokosuka again. 1st. ed. 1998 SIGNED

Description :

Fine and signed copy.

The Japanese photographer Miyako Ishiuchi was born in 1947 in harbour city understanding a big American military basis. She decides very fast to dedicate itself to the photography and begins by photographing decrepit parties of the city of Yokosuka with its abandoned buildings and its forbidden prostitute streets connected to the American occupation. Miyako Ishiuchi is recognized on the international level for its status of pioneer as woman photographer and in 2014 she the international Prize of the Hasselblad Foundation.

Yokosuka is a harbour city situated in the mouth of Tokyo’s bay and shelters one of the biggest bases of the american military navy since the end of World War II. The presence of the sailors pulled created a district of "pleasure" where Ishiuchi, child, could not circulate. This fact makes her say that this district was not Japan but America. The feeling of wound was such as when Ishiuchi penetrated for the first time into this district from now on left with its camera, she was not able to press on the trigger. 4 year later she will rent for 6 months a cabaret in this district to photograph these streets and these constructions before their disappearance. In an uncertain lighting, these photos constitute, with their granular aspect, a journey In the memory of a city and in the memory of a wounded child.
