Miyako ISHIUCHI : Mothers. E.O. 2002

Artist's book moving in a very beautiful copy.

The Japanese photographer Miyako Ishiuchi was born in 1947 in harbour city understanding a big American military basis. She decides very fast to dedicate itself to the photography and begins by photographing decrepit parties of the city of Yokosuka with its abandoned buildings and its forbidden prostitute streets connected to the American occupation. Further to two terrible earthquakes as well as in the wounds of the war she will lead a photographic research on scars, withered skins and clothes in their intimate relation to the people who cwore them. Miyako Ishiuchi is recognized on the international level for its status of pioneer as woman photographer and in 2014 she the international Prize of the Hasselblad Foundation.

In 2000, Ishiuchi participated in an exhibition commemorating two murderous earthquakes. She made her mother come and photographed pieces enlarged by the body of this one with grave burns which had formerly left with her indelible scars. Before that she exposes these photos of fragments of body of her mother, this one died suddenly, without seeing photos. Ending up alone with cloths and personnal things of her mother, from now on useless, she says to himself that she should burn them, as we had made it of the body. She felt incapable and photographed them to try to part from it: they are " almost pieces of the skin " she said. The book which ensues from it was published in 2002 and this work was presented to the art biennial event of Venice in 2005.
